The Art Of True Living

I found this small booklet at either a book store or garage sale, I don't really remember. It's from the 1930's, for a meditation and metephysical goup called The Institute of Mental Physics. It was headed by Edwin Dingle who was one of the first folks to introduce this sort of thing to the US.

It's indicitive on where LA got it's new age reputation as being a place where folks from wherever could come and try something new. Literally. This sort of Tibetan mysticism must have seemed like it was from Mars back then.

The group has since relocated the Joshua Tree and the building is now housed by a Korean Presbyterian Church.

And since we spent about 70% of the time in that office doodling (yes, getting paid to doodle. Not paid very much, but , nevertheless), there's reams and stacks of sketches and drawing, and skecthes for boards that never came out, etc.

They Live!

Possibly one of my favorite films of all time. This John Carpenter classic starred the immortally amazing Rowdy Roddy Piper as a mild mannered homeless construction worker, who through chance, stumbles upon a resistance movement that manufacture special sunglasses. These sunglasses allow you to see the world how it truly is. It's a black n white subliminal messaged landscape covered in messages like 'OBEY' and 'MARRY & REPRODUCE'.



An old friend actually worked on the movie and had bundles of the actual stickers used in the film. He gave me a bunch I truly covet these stickers, and once in a while,I find a die-hard fan whom I anoint with one of these (I even gave an OBEY one to Shepherd Fairey at a party, he pretty much lost his mind). Some of these were die-cut for the items they were specified for like a beer bottle, or, tuna can.





It also feature one of the greatest fight scenes ever filmed:

Subway Raid

Here's a piece from a while back. This is when I was trying my hand at Action Scripting involving dragable items. This was for a show I was working on at the time, and, the site needed some interactive content.

My idea here was to make a subway car you could decorate, eventually print out, and fold into a 3D subway car (I'm pretty sure it still works). Action Script has changed leaps and bounds since, but, the principles are all the same.
