Textures

Since all o fthe pages are inked (!!!) and scanned in, the next step for embelishment is grays and assorted textures. While I'm not going too computer-y and trying to keep everything as hand drawn as possible. I ended up scanning in sketches and hand drawn patterns, to have as a sort of home made filter. As soon as some results are up, I'll post em.

Sketchbook

Whenever I talk to budding illustrators, I'm always telling about the importance of having a sketchbook handy at all times. I have a bunch of them that are filled with random sketches, ideas, inane thoughts, and they really end up being a visual journal. One that the owner would only be able to interpret. So, in the pages of this here blog, I'll be posting random pages I've had over the years.

Stoked Sessions

Stoked Sessions and the Grind Gallery in Venice hosted a skateboard artwork fundraiser on Saturday benefiting LA at risk youth. The foundation is centered around action sports and the mentoring program that accompanies it. All sorts of artists came out to contribute including Steve Caballero, Mike Giant, Abe Lincoln Jr and yours truly. Most of the boards had pretty sizable bids, and the event was a success. Some of the skate artwork was pretty amazing, and, was great to see some of these artists stuff up close.

Radiohead/ANIBOOM

The folks over at Aniboom are partnering up with Radiohead for an animated music video contest. There've been some entries already that are posted by Cold Hard Flash. There's 2 more days left to this contest, so, if you've got an idea, pick a song and go to it.

Villain Board

Though it's been about 10 years since I did any skateboard graphics, I was asked to create one for an upcoming fundraiser. I figured I'd make a graphic with the Doom character I've worked with over the years. Most of this is actually made with stencils and spray enamel, and then some one-shot sign paint for touch ups. It ended up being a bit frustrating, but the results were probably as good as I could get without having to silk-screen.

Ollie Johnston

Nursing myself back to health, I was on the couch watching The Incredibles, and, aside from marveling at the amazing job they did on that film, I was surprised that this time I actually noticed the Frank & Ollie cameo shown below.

Ollie Johnston, along with his longtime collaborator Frank Thomas, was one of Disneys Nine Old Men, who were responsible for creating the original string of classic Disney movies, ranging from Snow White, all of the way to the Jungle Book.

Sad to say Ollie passed away today, but, he leaves behind an amazing legacy. There 's so much to say about him, that, nothing I could write in this post would do him justice. There's some great books out there that feature his work, most notably The Illusion of Life. Check it out.

Flyers

A page for the graphic novel that's in the works is meant to harken back to Phase 2 and Buddy Esquires old Hip Hop flyers. I just found this site that has a lot of these posted. The best part is the tape that's still attached to these.

Check em out:

Frosty Freeze

One of the founding members of the Rock Steady Crew, Frosty Freeze, passed away today. He was 44. From his early days with the RSC to his cameos in the movie Flashdance, Style Wars, Wildstyle and his countless TV appearance, he'll always be remembered as one the first and the greats.

His signature move is probably the 'Suicide' which he famously executed in this clip for FlashDance, which for me, was the first time I'd ever seen breakdancing (I think my mother dragged me to this movie).

He'll be missed!

YouTube Stats

I'm not sure anyones' seen this yet, but any videos that you have posted will keep track of the number of visitors and their location.

It pretty much tracks the entire range of viewership of your videos. Next to the the tracker, it actually has a map of the world that show which countries gave you the most views. If you click on 'video info' next to your posted video, it'll bring this up.

And More Inks...

Almost at the 3/4 milestone of the 100. Here's page 61 in the works. This was one of the bigger, more complex shots. The challenge to any illustration that takes place in a city requires that buildings must be included in the background.
