T La Rock
One of the first actual pieces of vinyl I owned was a single by T La Rock from 1984 called 'It's Yours'. Little did I know it would stand as one of the classic Hip Hop singles of all time.

Not only would it feature production of Rick Rubin (recorded in his NYU dorm room apparently) and would serve as the first Def Jam/PartyTime single.

There's a great interview with T La Rock regarding his career as well as that single. Read it here!

Don Martin
I'm always struck about how little I hear about Don's work. For me, he had to be one of the biggest sole influences on my illustration. And you can't help but notice his style in Matt Groening Simpsons or Family Guy. His bean-pole characters along with their huge feet endured torture and humiliation alongside a slew of illustrated graphic sound effects, that were as fun to read as the comics themselves.
Don got his start as a printer typesetter, and later was hired by newly founded MAD Magazine in 1956. He ususally ran 2 or 3 strips in each issue, usually with benign titles, that resulted in their protaganist being mauled or beat up in some way.

Don went on to contribute to some various animation throughout the years including this rare and early VH1 promo from the 80's:

Motion Man- Clearing The Field
In 2002, Threshold Records released Bay Area rap maverick Motion Man's debut LP, Clearing The Field. Motion has a pretty rich history, making his was through numerous bay area acts including Zero Tolerance, Noggin Nodders, etc.

After some colaborations and guest spots on Kool Keiths solo projects, it was high time for his own record. In planning for the project, head of Threshold Records, Kurt Matlin, had action figure created of himself and Motion Man. We took this into the record design, and came up with by far one of the funnest projects I've ever worked on. I agreed to come on to promote the record with album art as well as a music video, assorted promo materials.

We put together a booklet for lyrics for the records, using photos taken by Scott Zuschin, who, ingeniously pulled off great close up images of the figures which gave them an eerie lifelike quality.
